A blind-spot monitor is a system that relies on radar or ultrasonic sensors in your rear bumper to alert you if another vehicle has entered into your blind spot while you're driving. Some systems go even further and include cameras and on-board monitors to give you even more visibility. If any other vehicle gets into your blind-spot and gets close enough to activate the sensors, they will alert you so you can avoid a costly accident.
Although blind-spot monitors do make driving safer and easier, they are by no means meant as a replacement for diligence on the road. Even if you have a state-of-the-art monitoring system on your vehicle, you should still be checking your blind spots as you change lanes or pass any other vehicles on the highway.
